Mission: Space....my soapbox
Just sitting here at my desk skimming over the latest news photos on msn.com and voting on the picture that speaks the most to me; I am again reminded that the space shuttle has made it's way back into, well, space. When I was a child, mom, dad and I would all venture down to the Cape to see the launches. I would just stand there, jaw dropped, in utter amazement! I want to go into space one day and I know that is the dream for a lot of children at some point in their precious lives or at least it was back in the 80's.
Space: The Final Frontier. Hmm..um...well, now the thought of going into space is not as tempting. Maybe it's because of all the disasters that have occured. I'm sure my thoughts of space travel were skewed by the Challenger explosion, but I don't think that is why I'm not interestsed in space any longer. What good would it do me to travel there? Why do Americans need to live on Mars? Or in a space station? It's not like I can get out an witness to the aliens...ha, don't even get me started on that.
I think it's that my expectations are somewhat higher (no pun intended)...I don't want to travel to space...the only time I intend to go up is when my time on earth is through. But, really, what is the point of space travel? Back in the 50's it brought about the Mod look and everyone was "into" space travel and living in space, but it has not been the simple task that, dare I say, the media made it out to be. People wanted to live like The Jetson's, zoom through space in our flying saucers, but here it is the 21st century and there is no glorious chance to live in space...it's all still a dream.
To tell you the truth, I was just glad the space shuttle got into space without exploding. The billions and billions of dollars that are poured into NASA each year seems like somewhat of a waste to me. America is headed to hell and all we can do is think that going into space is somehow going to make our lives better, let us live longer. Reality check: it's not gonna happen. Jesus walked the Earth, not Mars. But humans have this feeling they need to conquer space. Figure it out.
Well, enough about that...just felt I needed to get out my soapbox since it's been in storage recently...
